New inspirations of mix media

Paul Villinski

NY based artist Paul Villinski creates mesmerising art installations and pieces fromfound objects and trash, and his Beer Can Butterflies are among his most striking work.In his words: "Who leaves these crushed beer cans forlorn evidence scattered in the streets of the city? I take these "dead soldiers"-every one of them once raised to someone's lips-and breathe new life into them, changing them into images that suggest the possibility of change itself. A kind of conceptual unity developsbetween materials, process and imagety: my practice in the studio mimics the act of transformation that butterflies symbolize everywhere, in all cultures."

Yuken Teruya's work proves that discarded everyday objects can be re-invented into something elegant and beautiful. He crafts toilet paper rolls with a level of detail so taht they adopt a new identity as delicately sculpted pieces-reminiscent of columnar wind chimes invterwined in the branches of a tree.

Paper experimenting

Inspired by the 3D wall art I mentioned before, I wanted to do some experiments with paper. I got some pieces of colourful paper which are in similar tone. I like this match of colours as they look very comfortable and clean, show in different depths. I didn't have any specific ideas about what I can make with them, so I just cut those pieces of paper in hearted shapes and put them together to see what they look like.

Paper art inspirations

I found these interesting paper work on a photographer's flickr,  unfortunately there is no information shows the name of the designer. In my view, this serious of work is very eye catching and creative, those 3D shapes of clouds, fire balloons and umbrella give the whole design a soul-----produce a dreamy fairy tale style as well as realistic. I have got a strong inspiration from this illustrative design and I plan to combine both 2D and 3D in my work, exploring with different materials and techniques to create a piece of unconventional design which is mentioned in the brief.

Rough ideas for first illustration

When I listened to the song again and again, there were many scenes and ideas appeared in my mind. The atmosphere of the song is very brisk, cheerful and sweet, representing a lovely girl is falling in love with her mr.right and enjoying the sweet moment of missing him. Therefore, the initial word appeared in my brain to describe this emotion is " float away". A girl who immersed herself totally in her sweet fantasy as if floating in the sky and "lost in paradise". Based on this idea, I drew down some drafts to make it more clear. I have been looking into 3Dtechniques and think about what I could use in this project. My idea is to make the illustration look different and eye catching. Instead of being a piece of 2D hand drawing or digital work, I wanna to make something that the audience interact with as well as feeling the emotion of my chosen music.

Let's start from here- The first song I have chosen

Let's start from here

Among all tracks by Joanna Wong,"Let's start from here" is one of my favourite.I was totally touched by her beautiful smooth voice, which magically makes me relax and satisfied. The lyrics are discribing a leisurely and carefree lifestyle, showing an attitude of "happy-go-lucky as ever",which is very inspiring to me.

Lyrics:

giving up
why should i
have come too far to forget
beautiful
just got lost
somewhere along the way
so much was missing when you went away

let's start from here
lose the past
change our minds
we don't need a finish line
let's take this chance
don't think to deep
all those promises we couldn't seem to keep
I don't care where we go
let's start from here

standing here
face to face
a finger on your lips
don't say a word
don't make a sound
silence around us now
even when you were gone I felt you everywhere

let's start from here
lose the past
change our minds
we don't need a finish line
let's take this chance don't think to deep
all those promises we couldn't seem to keep
I don't care where we go
let's start from here
let's start from here

I've never been the one to open up
but you've always been the voice within
the only one for my cold heart

let's start from here
lose the past
change our minds
we don't need a finish line
let's take this chance
don't think to deep
and all those promises
let's start from here
lose the past
change our minds
we don't need a finish line
let's take this chance don't think to deep
all those promises we couldn't seem to keep
I don't care where we go
let's start from here

This is the first song I have chosen from the music of Joanna Wang. I felt in love with this song immediately when the first time I heard it. Wang's vocal and the beautiful melody are the soul of the music, relaxing, sensuous beat, heaven sent, dreamy and delightful......This is a very, very romantic tune to me, it reminds me of the happy time and indelible moments I spent with my boy friend. This song offers a very romantic view on the excited feelings of unrequited love with the well written lyrics which I think is very inspiring.

The sultry voice of Joanna Wang

The sultry voice of Joanna Wang

I listen to Chinese music all the time. I have heard many Taiwanese singers try to sing in English and fail miserably at it. Until now; I can safely say that I found a nice gem of a singer. Her name is Joanna Wang and her music style is a bit unfamiliar to the normal Taiwanese pop music style. Her English is spot on and her voice is most similar to Nora Jones.
Her album consists of 15 songs with 3 only sang in Chinese Mandarin. All the rest of the songs are in English which definitely makes her stand out and shows her confidence as an English singer. After listening through her album, there are definitely noteworthy songs on this album especially her single, Start From Here. The Chinese version of the song is titled “Maze”. She also sings the David Tao classic “I Love You” redone in English. Another notable song I enjoy is “Lost Tapei”, which gives me a sense of nostalgic feeling from my recent visits back to Taiwan and its hectic nightlife and buildings. If you have not heard of her yet, take note because her music is definitely worth the time to check out.

One of the most beautiful places in the world, Positano, which is part of the Amalfi coast in Italy. Homes within mountains overlooking crystal clear waters.
Everytime I look at this painting, I only wish to return to it, and I hear Dean Martin sing the song: “Return to Me,” or in Italian, “Ritorna-Me.”

Out Of The Box

Artist: Songmistress

Genie – by Marillion

I let the genie out of the box
I let the genie out of the box
I’m scared of everything I am
I let the genie out of the box
I’m scared of opening the can
I let the genie out of the box

I had this recurring dream
I was living another life
In another country
In another time

As I got older the dream began to fade away
Until one day
There she was… tapping me on my shoulder

She says she’s got so much to say
But she’s not telling it today
She said “Come back when you’re alone”
But I’m not sure I want to know
Cause maybe her road
Is a one-way street
Maybe her road…

I’m scared of everything I am
I’m scared of opening the can
I’m scared of losing who I am
Think I might’ve taken all I can
I let the genie out of the box

She said there’s a house in your mind
An attic of treasure, a forgotten pleasure park
Waiting inside you in the dark
Don’t leave it behind
Don’t leave it behind

I’m scared of everything I am
I’m scared of opening the can
I’m scared of losin’ who I am
Think I might’ve taken all I can
I let the genie out of the box
I let the genie out of the box
Out of the box

For the love of Marillion. For the love of this song…and, besides, it is an utterly autobiographical work of art:
I really am scared of everything I am…
scared of opening the can,
scared (terribly scared) of losin’ who I am
I’m sure I’ve taken all I can…
I let the genie out of the box
I let the genie out of the box
Out of the box…

Fragility

Artist: Dawne Olson
While out on the lake last Saturday I noticed several leaves floating in the water from the surrounding Cottonwood trees. The ones that were the most emotionally compelling for me were these simple skeletal remains. So much beauty in such frailty. A symbol of life.

Beck's Music Inspired Art

It is well known that art stays relevant through the constant evolution of ideas. With this in mind, we have taken our ongoing collaboration with cutting edge artists to a new level this year with the ‘Music Inspired Art’ campaign.
The album cover has always been the musicians’ canvas, and in its heyday, an outlet for art, social comment and experimentation. So we've commissioned ten influential artists to ‘Re-Imagine’ the covers from some of the most iconic albums from the past four decades, using the music as inspiration.
